UNICEF, Papua New Guinea had engaged Feedback Foundation (FF) for Strengthening the CLTS Capacity of four District Teams of Papua New Guinea viz. Central Bougainville, Nawaeb, Goroka and Mt Hagen. The objective of the project was to improve access to safe sanitation and hygiene behavior in 200 schools, 36 health centres and 769 neighbouring communities in the 4 pilot districts, by helping them achieve Open Defecation Free (ODF) status and improving their hygiene practices. The project started in August, 2019 and District Level Visioning and Action Planning workshops had been conducted in all the 4 districts. 5-day Training of Mobilizers had also been conducted in all the 4 districts, to enhance the capacity of Community Mobilizers on CLTS approach and create a dedicated district resource pool to augment the implementation of safe sanitation and hygiene related activities in order to make the districts ODF. This was followed by Refresher workshops in the project districts. A contextualised CLTS Module has also been developed to be used by local teams for further capacity building. 2-day ‘WaSH in School’ Training Programmes were also conducted in the 4 Districts. Strategic Supervision Support has been provided to all the 4 districts for facilitating villages to attain ODF status. ODF Verification and Certification Protocol has been developed and the ODF villages have been verified and certified. A Joint Review Mission (JRM) was conducted that contributed towards institutionalizing the practice of documenting, learning and sharing of what has worked and also to recognize a need to understand what has not worked. Till December 2021, 98% communities, 96% schools and 97% health centers had attained ODF status. This intervention is part of ’Klinpela Komuniti Projek’ supported by European Union UNICEF WaSH Project.
