From Waste to Resource: Chakrata’s Sustainable Journey

Chakrata Cantonment Board is a picturesque hill station in Uttarakhand, where Feedback Foundation is providing technical assistance in two key waste management initiatives: biomining and bioremediation of legacy waste, and establishment of an Integrated Decentralized Solid Waste Management system across all wards. Launched in November 2022, the project targets the diversion of 5768 tons of waste from the landfill over 36 months. Notably, 3580 tons of legacy waste have already undergone successful remediation, resulting in the complete clearance of the landfill site. The remaining 2188 tons will be managed through integrated decentralized solid waste management in a period of 3 years.
A state-of-art Sanitation Park, comprising of a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) and Micro-Composting Center (MCC), has been developed at the cleared landfill site. This significant achievement is the result of collaborative efforts between Feedback Foundation, Godrej Properties Limited, and the Chakrata Cantonment Board (CCB). This initiative addresses the city's solid waste management needs comprehensively, incorporating waste collection, segregation, processing, and treatment. The project underscores citizen involvement through awareness campaigns and workshops, promoting source segregation and instilling waste reduction practices. Ultimately, the project aspires to create a cleaner and more sustainable environment in Chakrata Cantonment by deploying innovative waste management techniques and cultivating a culture of responsible waste disposal.
